2020 has been an interesting year for us all, and the impact of the Coronavirus has hit particularly hard on much of the hospitality industry. Although we haven’t been able to eat at our favourite restaurants and shop in our favourite foodie shops as much as we’d like, with businesses adapting to the new challenges they have faced, many have been offering home deliveries.
For inspiration, recommendations and regular updates from local restaurants, cafes, pubs and food / drink shops – join the Three Counties Food & Drink Facebook group here.
Here are 12 food & drink home deliveries we have ordered in lockdown from independents.
Roly Poly Eats, Pershore
Roly Poly Eats are a quality takeaway offering a selection of burgers, hot dogs and fries with a difference. Fries are hand cut on site, meat is sourced from the owner’s Dad who is a local butcher and all ingredients are sourced from local suppliers and producers where possible. As our most local takeaway, we have ordered several meals from RPE which have conveniently been delivered hot to our door. The Pershore shop has been so successful that an upstairs restaurant space has been renovated and is ready to open in 2021, as well as a second site which opened in Evesham at the end of 2020.
Opening hours: Thursday to Saturday: 4 pm-9 pm / Sunday 4 pm-8 pm (orders taken from 2 pm)
Delivery: 5 miles radius of both locations.
Jimmy Pickles, Pershore
Missing one of our favourite local Indian restaurants to dine in and meet friends, we ordered a couple of takeaways from Jimmy Pickles in Pershore. Although we find them a little more expensive than the average Indian takeaway in the area, we enjoyed the luxury of being able to satisfy our curry craving in the comfort of our own home. Our top picks are the Chicken Jaipuri, Chicken Shashlik and the Paneer Ki Tikka.
Opening hours: Open 7 days a week: 5:30 pm-11:30 pm
Delivery: Delivery on orders of £20 or more and free delivery is only offered within 3 miles of the restaurant. There will be an additional charge for deliveries beyond this distance
Bottles Wine Shop, Worcester
It was during the first lockdown back in March when we first discovered that Bottles Wine Bar & Merchants in Worcester were doing local deliveries of their wine & spirits stock whilst they had to temporarily close the bar. We were previously buying wine from the supermarket and were delighted to support local, especially as they are one of our favourite Worcester bars! Once the first lockdown was lifted, Bottles decided to continue their free local delivery service and have now extended this nationally for an additional charge.
Over Christmas the bar was converted into a shop offering Christmas hampers, gifts, stocking fillers, wine, cheese, port and more, as well as offering virtual wine tastings. Keep your eyes peeled on their Facebook page for news and updates.
Opening hours: Monday – Wednesday 9:30 am-7 pm, Thursday-Saturday 9:30 am-9 pm, Sunday 10:30 am-4 pm (shop reopens on Monday 28th December after Christmas)
Delivery: Free delivery on orders over £50 for WR1-6 postcodes, £4.95 delivery charge for the rest of Worcestershire and from £8.95 standard charge for the rest of the UK
Neighbourhood Deli, Worcester
Neighbourhood Deli in Worcester quickly diversified their offering following the news of the first lockdown to make sure that vulnerable people who were unable to leave the house were catered for. The ‘supply box‘ was born and it came filled with essentials including chef and owner, Clint’s homemade goodies.
As we entered the summer months additional boxes were created and we ordered their ‘BBQ Box’ – a BBQ meal for two pre-prepared including instructions on how to finish everything off at home on your own BBQ. Neighbourhood are still making up their supply boxes and have added in a variety of ‘make your own kits’ and regularly announce their fresh ‘donut dash’ on their Facebook page.
Opening hours: Wednesday-Saturday 9 am-5 pm and 9 am-4 pm on Sunday
Delivery: Free Friday delivery within a 5 mile radius of Worcester city centre between 3 pm-6 pm
The Wobbly Brewery & Events, Hereford
Pubs were forced to close during lockdown, and many resorted to offering deals on their stock so it didn’t go to waste to customers who were able to collect. Similarly, breweries were selling off bundles with local and nationwide delivery. A flash sale from The Wobbly Brewery in Hereford caught our attention when they posted details of their 24 pale ale box for just £15 across their social media pages. With just £5 postage and packaging costs this was an absolute steal! Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates and news on future offers and promotions.
Opening hours: Shop currently closed due to Covid tier restrictions
Delivery: Standard delivery nationwide from £5
Tubby Tom’s, Gloucester
Our Tubby Tom’s hot sauce obsession began long before lockdown, but they deserve a mention because we have been doing far more home cooking than usual and there’s pretty much a Tubby Tom’s sauce to go with everything! We also love that many of our favourite local shops, restaurants and takeaways are also a huge fan and stock and use a range of their products. The handmade sauces, rubs and condiments are produced by founder Tom from his unit in Gloucester, who made his first BBQ sauce in 2014 and has since hired his Mum along with a few friends as the business has rapidly expanded. As well as their online shop, Tubby Tom’s products can also be found in over 85 outlets as well as being showcased at local food festivals and markets.
Delivery: Nationwide with a £4.20 p&p charge
Mojitos Rum Bar & Pizzeria, Upton-Upon-Severn
Mojitos is Worcestershire’s new concept Rum bar and Pizzeria with a “create” your own Mojito menu using fresh fruits and a choice of over 20 rums and stone baked pizzas.
When the hospitality industry was asked to close back in March, Mojito’s Rum Bar and Pizzeria in Upton-upon-Severn didn’t let this stop them serving their delicious hot pizza and cocktails to their loyal customers. Instead they boxed up their pizzas and poured their mixed cocktails into takeaway cups ready for collection and local delivery. We took advantage of our new local takeaway delivery option and ordered a ‘meat lover’ and ‘make your own’ pizza, and washed them down with a blueberry Mojito and a passionfruit Mojito!
Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 12 noon-9 pm and Sunday 12 noon-7 pm
Delivery: Local delivery in and around Upton-upon-Severn
Libertine Burger, Leamington Spa & Rugby
As the year went on and lockdowns started to become the new way of life, we saw more and more restaurants offering DIY kits so you could enjoy your favourite meals at home. Libertine Burger in Leamington Spa were without a doubt one of our favourite burger places. Unable to visit them this year we were delighted to hear the news that they had put together their classic #004 burger as a DIY Kit for burger lovers to cook at home. The kit contains ingredients for 4 burgers and comes with everything you need to recreate the Libertine experience at home. It even comes with Libertine branded ketchup and mustard bottles and their signature graffiti greaseproof burger sheets.
We had so much fun making these, and as it looks like it could be a while before we’ll be able to visit again, we’ll just have to order some more! Since checking back to the website they have now added their #009 burger to the shop!
Leamington Spa opening hours: Monday to Saturday 12 noon- 10 pm and Sunday 12 noon-6:30 pm (collection only during current lockdown restrictions)
Rugby opening hours: Tuesday to Thursday 12 noon-10 pm (collection only during current lockdown restrictions)
Delivery: Local delivery to each location from usual takeaway menu. DIY kits available for nationwide delivery on selected dates only.
The Indian Guy, Cheltenham
For an Indian takeaway experience that is not as you know it, let me introduce you to The Indian Guy. Created by two friends passionate about the best Indian street food dishes they love and using recipes passed down from their founder’s Mum, The Indian Guy puts a unique twist on your regular Friday night curry order. The Indian Guy’s food is 100% plant based and is a healthy, flavoursome alternative takeaway treat.
We had previously attended one of their local pop-ups events, and were delighted to hear the news that a new delivery service had been developed following the success of their ‘heat at home’ menus. Taking advantage of the 15% discount code for new customers (enter ‘morethanjustcurry15’ at the checkout) we placed our first order. As meat eaters and a big fan of our local curry houses, we were surprised at how much we enjoyed the vegan friendly meal and didn’t miss the meat one little bit.
Delivery: Delivery within 35 miles of Cheltenham is £3. Nationwide delivery is available at £4.95 (minimum order £20).
Rudy’s Pizza, Birmingham
As a huge pizza fan it can be quite frustrating to have so few options locally for a good pizza, especially one that can be delivered. Scrolling through Twitter one day I came across a tweet from Birmingham food blogger ‘Meat & One Veg‘ who had taken delivery of a selection of pizzas from one of his favourite local pizzerias in Birmingham. He had mentioned that Rudy’s Birmingham were offering nationwide delivery of their much loved Neapolitan pizzas.
Using the same fresh dough and handmade in-house, Rudy’s bake at home pizzas are vacuum packed and available for next day delivery. We ordered 6 pizzas to start with and were able to freeze them and cook easily once defrosted for a delicious weekend treat. We loved them so much that we ordered another 6 shortly afterwards.
Opening hours: Currently closed to dine in guests due to government guidance.
Delivery: Local delivery and collection available in Birmingham. Next day nationwide delivery for bake at home orders
Method Roastery, Hereford & Worcester
Every year I order my husband a couple of kilos of Method coffee at Christmas and this year is no exception. In fact last year I bought him a monthly subscription which was great as he got to try a new flavour of coffee every month, yet he still swears by the classic Hay blend.
Working directly with specialist farms and co-operatives Method offer carefully selected and exclusive lots of coffee. As well as their online shop, Method Roastery have a coffee bar in Worcester and serve at various locations such as Wayland’s Yard.
Opening hours: Thursday to Sunday 10 am-4 pm (Worcester shop). You can also find them on a Thursday at Hay-on-Wye’s Farmers Market – at the top of town, opposite the castle.
Delivery: Nationwide delivery on online orders
Last year we visited both Dishoom in Manchester and Dishoom in Edinburgh and were blown away by both. The news was revealed that Dishoom were opening a restaurant a little closer to home this year and that they were coming to Birmingham. Excited by the this we couldn’t wait to visit, waited for the launch parties to be over and had planned our visit. Sadly this didn’t happen as we entered the Covid world and unfortunately the new restaurant had to close. As an independently owned business which has grown quickly due to their popularity and success it has been a joy to support and follow the journey.
After purchasing the Dishoom cookery book the first thing we wanted to recreate was the bacon & egg naan roll which we had enjoyed so much during our Manchester visit. We then discovered that Dishoom had put together a ‘make at home bacon naan roll kit‘ (vegan option also available), which included all of the ingredients and instructions to easily recreate their signature breakfast dish at home. We ordered ours for our Christmas Eve breakfast and it was superb! The only thing missing was a Dishoom cocktail which we’ve since discovered they also offer in their online store!
Opening hours: Restaurant’s currently closed due to government guidance
Delivery: Nationwide delivery for online orders
