Some close friends first told me about The Broom Tavern and what a great meal they’d eaten there. I looked at their menu online and knew I was going to love the food when it listed things like crab nachos! I’d never had crab nachos, what a great idea, I needed these in my life.

Just before Christmas my boyfriend and I were staying in Alcester and decided to have lunch at The Broom Tavern as it was close by. Here was my opportunity to try these incredible sounding nachos. We had such a fantastic lunch which also included the Tavern burger and one of their delicious pizzas – we couldn’t wait to go back for dinner. We loved the crab nachos so much that we have since recreated them at home, my version of the recipe is here.

We arranged to meet our friends who originally recommended The Broom Tavern to me for dinner. It was a Friday evening in February, the 4 of us arrived at 7pm and immediately the pub felt very different from when my boyfriend and I had our quiet lunch there in December. The bar area was full with people drinking and talking, there was a real buzz to the atmosphere. We were seated at the nearest table to the bar so it was quite noisy but still very enjoyable. When the subject of food came up I was so tempted to order the crab nachos and the burger again as they had been so good on our previous visit. My boyfriend persuaded me to try something different so we decided to share the pulled pork nachos and the crab tortellini with scallops to start, he then chose the rib eye steak and I went for the fish pie for our main courses. Our friends shared the crab nachos and the crab tortellini with scallops to start followed by the lamb and the tagliatelle.

Despite the pub and restaurant being extremely busy, our waiter was very attentive and we didn’t have to wait too long for the food either. Every plate of food that came to our table was presented beautifully and tasted fantastic. Just a tip though, you probably don’t need a starter and a main course unless you haven’t eaten for a few days beforehand…the portions are huge! We persevered though as it was just so good. I tried some of my boyfriends steak which was cooked to perfection and our friends tagliatelle was rich, creamy and absolutely delicious. My fish pie was colossal but filled with haddock, huge prawns, cod an egg all amongst a moreish creamy sauce. The homemade bread, sundried tomato paste and side of peas with samphire were a welcomed touch too. Nobody got to try the lamb, apparently it was too good to share?

Absolutely stuffed we all agreed that we couldn’t manage pudding. Miraculously the dessert board appeared on the table along with the menus and before we knew it we’d ordered ice cream and a chocolate assiette of yumminess. We were all in agreeance that the food and wine was not only really great quality but also good value for money too. We were really impressed and will be back for more. This is a superb pub / restaurant who are definitely doing something right.
